What is a panic attack?


Most everyone at one time or the other has had a panic attack. You are in a situation where you feel like you have no control over what is going to happen next. An immediate feeling of terror takes over as you wonder what to do. The panic attack may last a few seconds to close to an hour; it all depends upon the person. Some folks are able to handle them better than others.

What triggers a panic attack?

 

  1. Phobias are a common trigger of panic attacks.
  2. The side effects of certain medications
  3. a less then assertive nature can lead to panic attacks
  4. Certain disorders like obsessive compulsive disorder or post traumatic stress disorder
  5. It may run in the family, heredity can cause panic attacks.

What causes shortness of breath during a panic attack?

 

Hyperventilation also known as over breathing is when your excessive breathing causes low levels of carbon dioxide in your blood stream.

Some of the symptoms are:

  1. Dizziness
  2. tingling feet
  3. rapid breathing
  4. numb feet and hands
  5. feeling faint
  6. chest pain
  7. increased heartbeat

 

What helps with panic attacks?

 

The most popular method to treat panic attacks is cognitive and behavioral therapies. This type of therapy teaches you to react in a more positive way when a situation could possibly lead to a panic attack.  Medication can also be used.

What is Agoraphobia?

 

Is the fear of being in a situation where you can’t escape or you might be embarrassed.
