Have you considered a hearing aid?

I have noticed over the years that my hearing especially in my left ear isn’t very good. It has gotten so bad that I can’t hold a phone to that ear and I have to ask people who are talking to me to repeat what they are saying, which is embarrassing. That are many reasons for losing your hearing, the most obvious one is just getting older (which could be another reason why my hearing is going bad).  Diseases and injuries can also cause hearing damage. In my own case I have Meniere’s disease which is often linked to hearing loss. If you talk to folks about your hearing problem they will probably suggest getting a hearing aid. I thought about but my doctor told me since my hearing in my right ear was pretty good the hearing aid in my left ear might distort all my hearing.

What is a hearing aid?

Generally a hearing aid makes the sound coming into your ear louder.  It was comprised of 3 parts; microphone, amplifier and speaker.  That seems like a lot of stuff in such a small device but it is all needed to help you hear better.

Hearing aid information

What happens inside the ear to minimize your hearing?

The inner ear has tiny cells called hair cells that pick up sound, if these cells are damaged it will limit the amount of things that you hear. How the hearing aid is set depends on how much damage is done to these cells, if there is great damage then you hearing aid is set much higher.

What are the types of hearing aids?

1. In the ear – that fit completely in the outer ear

2. Behind the ear

3. Canal – fits in the canal of the ear

Another important factor to think about when considering a hearing aid is that most insurance companies don’t cover them, why I don’t know. Unfortunately this might stop some people from getting one. But there are some places that provide financial assistance for the purpose of buying a hearing aid.

Great missive. Gradual Hearing Loss is a serious problem as a lot of people experience dimished hearing every year. Thanks for shedding some light on this problem.
