Is lifting weights just for young folks? The answer is no, anyone can do strength training at any age. In fact it is encouraged by the health community and older people are trying it every day.
Before starting any exercise program you should check with your doctor first.
There are many benefits to strength training.
- It helps prevent bone mass loss which is important as you get older. The threat of osteoporosis can be greatly reduced by starting a strength training program. Women, more than men, will find this type of exercise vital to preserving bone mass.
- Strength training helps with your balance. If you have a problem with your balance you will have a greater risk of falling which is a big problem for elderly folks.
- Strength training helps with your metabolism which in turn helps you lose weight
- With a leaner body due to strength training you also reduce the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.
- You will sleep better.
- Your emotional state will be improved greatly
How much weight should you use?
You don’t have to lift a lot of weight to gain any benefits from strength training. In fact most people no matter what age they are start out lifting small amounts of weight. You should start out with little weight and build up the number of times that you can lift that weight. Over time you will find that you will be getting stronger. Take your time, do strength training a few times a week and be patient. You will be surprised at the difference in the way you feel after just a few short months.
